Origin of Singles Day 节日起源

Singles Day was first celebrated at variousuniversities in Nanjing, capital city of JiangsuProvince during the 1990s. It got the name SinglesDay because the date is comprised of four "ones". These college students have since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society. Singles Day is now a special day for allfashionable youths.

光棍节最先在90年代的江苏南京各大高校兴起。之所以叫“光棍节”是因为这一天的日子有四个光棍一样的“1”。大学生们毕业了，把这个传统带到了社会上，光棍节就成了时尚青年们的一个特殊节日。

An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None ofthem were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day andplayed Mahjong.

故事从四个过着单调生活的单身舍友说起。他们没有人结婚，连女朋友都没有，日子过得无精打采，终日打麻将度过。

One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, nomatter who won, the winning card was always the ’four columns’ card (the card shows fourindependent, parallel columns in two lines). Even more of a coincidence, it was Nov 11, or 11/11. In order to commemorate the day, they nicknamed it Singles Day.

The main way to celebrate Singles Day is to have dinner with your single friends, but it’simportant that each person pay their own way to show their independence. People also hold ’blind date’ parties in an attempt to bid goodbye to their single lives.

Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. Many attend ’blinddate’ parties and many people choose to marry on this day. BEIJING - Commander-in-chief of China’s mannedspace program Chang Wanquan announced earlyTuesday that the launch of Shenzhou-8 unmannedspacecraft is successful.

北京-中国载人航天计划总指挥常万全在本周二早上宣布神舟八号飞船成功发射。

The spacecraft was successfully sent into the designated orbit after the blastoff at 5:58 am atthe Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern desert area, carried by an upgraded LongMarch-2F rocket.

周二凌晨5时58分酒泉卫星发射中心，神舟八号搭载长征二号F型火箭发射升空，进入预定轨道。

It is heading to rendezvous with the Tiangong-1, or "Heavenly Palace-1" that was put intospace on September 29 for the country’s first space docking.

神舟八号将与9月29日发射升空的天宫一号实现“太空相会”，实施中国航天史上首次空间交会对接。

The docking, if successful, will pave the way for China to operate a permanent space stationaround 2020, and make the nation the world’s third to do so.

这次交会对接如果能成功完成，将为中国在2020年左右建立永久性太空站铺平道路，中国也将继美国和俄罗斯之后成为世界上第三个建立永久空间站的国家。

The docking will happen within two days after the launch of the Shenzhou VIII at a height of 343 km above Earth’s surface. The spacecraft will return to Earth after two docking operations.
