forlorn hope 敢死队

【讲解】

此语来自荷兰的军事用语verloren hoop在 荷兰语中是“敢死队”，相当于英语lost troop。verloren hoop是在16世纪进人英语的,到了丨7世纪以后verloren和hoop被英国人分别误为与其发音有点相似的英语词， forlorn和hoop相联系而演变成forlorn hope这一形式,意义也随之发生了变化，转而表示“孤注一掷的行动,渺茫的希望,绝少成功希望的企图”等意,在语言学中forlorn hope 一语往往被用作民俗语源（folk etyMo-ogy)的一个典型例子。
