There is an awesome shanghai restaurant in Nanjing Xinjiekou. Elvin wants to introduce his favorite cuisine — Shanghai cuisine to new foreign teacher Kate.

Elvin：Kate, I ordered some famous local Shanghai dishes for you to try today.

Kate：Thank you, Elvin. They all look amazing!

Elvin：Let's start with some appetizers. This one is smoked fish and the other one is seitan. Dig in!

Kate：They're both delicious! I love the sweet flavor.

Elvin：Then you're in for a treat! Shanghai food is pretty big on sweet soy flavor.

Kate：I see. Is that pork?

Elvin：Yes. It's actually the most famous Shanghai dish: soy braised pork. Try some.

Kate：I like it. But it's a bit too fatty.

Elvin：Well, have some tea and try some squirrel fish.

Kate：Squirrel fish?

Elvin：Oh, it's the name of the dish. It's fish, not squirrel. It has a sweet and sour sauce.
（噢，其实它只是菜名。是鱼肉，不是松鼠肉。酸甜口味的。)
Elvin, hands down, this is my favorite dish!

语言剖析

1. I ordered some famous local Shanghai dishes for you to try today.
local 当地的，地方的 dishes 菜
dish是餐桌上的一盘菜的菜的意思，这里的菜可不能翻译成vegetable蔬菜哦！
local用来强调上海的本土菜，local可以作形容词，表示当地的，当地的医院local hospital；当地居民local resident；当地最好的学校the best local school。
local也可以做名词，表示当地人，比如我们一起到上海游玩，将近中午，大家肚子都饿的咕咕叫，但是又不知道哪家餐厅好，于是就问当地人有何推荐：We asked one of the locals to recommend a you get lost, just ask a local for directions.如果你迷路了，找个当地人问路。.

老外用词常常很夸张，great已经无法形容这种有种喜欢的心情啦！得用 amazing!得还记得第一课的时候Elvin的朋友John曾经说过Nanjing is an amazing city吗？用以称赞南京是一个很棒的城市。
比如你的朋友向你展示一个手工作品，用纸做出了一朵栩栩如生的玫瑰花，这时你惊叹到：Wow，you are amazing！How can you make it！I really like this rose！哇塞，相信你的朋友听了之后一定非常的开心。

3. Let's start with some appetizers.
Let's start with some appetizers. 我们先从开胃菜开始吧。
appetizers是开胃菜的意思，不管是正统的西餐还是传统的中餐，一般线上的都是开胃菜，来提升胃口，to work up your tite是胃口的意思。今天我没有胃口吃饭，因为期末考试挂科啦！I had no appetite because I didn’t pass the final exam! Such a sad story.
start with，从...先开始，for example，昨天小E老师作为评委参加了一场英文比赛，这个比赛是以一首英文歌开场的，可以说，The competition started with a English song.

4. I love the sweet flavor.
flavor 口味
flavor表示口味，虽然taste也有味道的意思，但是老外通常会用taste动词形式，品尝食物。表示口味的话，flavor会更好哦！For example，我最喜欢的冰淇淋牌子提供很多口味。My favorite brand of ice cream comes in many flavors. There are chocolate，green tea and vanilla.哇塞有，巧克力为，抹茶味还有香草味的！美滋滋！

Shanghai food is pretty big on sweet soy flavor. 上海以红烧口味的菜闻名。
be big on 不是指上海菜有多大，不像东北菜那么豪爽，其实上海菜的盘子蛮小的，be big on真实的意思是really popular；
同时，be big on 同时也可以表示you really like to do something/your personal favorites，你的热爱，正在听课的你或许很热爱英语，你也可以说I am big on English.是不是比I like English高大上了许多。

6. hands down
hands down 毫无疑问
Hands done，表示无需手舞足蹈的解释，毫无疑问，通常后面会加上est最高级的形式，Hands down, that was the ugliest sports car I've ever seen in my life.毫无疑问，这是我人生中见过的最丑的跑车。
哇，前两天我在街上遇到了一位大美女，情不自禁的感叹道，This girl is, hands down, the most beautiful one I have ever met.
