  invite的词义辨析

invite for, invite to

这两者的区别在于:后者比前者更正式,请人吃便饭、小酌用for,正式宴会用to。另外,“征求意见等”只能用for。

invite, call, convene, convoke, muster, summon

这组词都表示“召开,召集”。其区别是:

convene的词义比较广,既可指召集某个团体,也可指单独调某人; 而convoke所表示的召集意思更正式,更具权威性,而且所召集的机构往往有权通过决议或有执行权; call和summon只用于指召集政权机构、正式会议等,而不用于指召集某些人,但summon的主体一般是有权的,要召集的态度也更坚决; muster不是表示召集,而是调集很多人于一地,它跟本组其他词的不同在于:它往往表示为检阅、演习等目的而调集,客体带有军事性质; invite则是客气地邀请,被邀者出席与否可以自愿选择。

invite, ask for

这两个词(组)的共同意思是“邀请,请求”。其区别是:

invite多指请人做不很劳累甚至有时是使人高兴的事,如请跳舞,参加晚会、吃饭、谈谈意见等; ask for意为“请,请求”,多指请求做需要付出努力的事。例如:

He felt sore about not being invited to the party.他为没有被邀请参加晚会而恼火。

With that he asked for their help.他接着就请求他们帮助。
