三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Moving can bring out the best and the worst in people, I’m finding. And I’ve discovered where a very generous spirit lives: Defiance, Ohio.

After suffering through many months of unemployment, my wife and I moved this week from Colorado to Ohio, where she’s starting a new job. Not knowing a person there, we were pretty concerned about all the work involved, including how we’d get all the things unloaded (卸下) without killing ourselves.

We made a connection to hire a couple of college students to help with all the heavy lifting once we got there. But one neighbor after another stopped by to help. What? Have we moved to some other country? Maybe we’ve died and gone to heaven!

Unloading actually became fun and pure joy as we connected with so many wonderful new friends as we worked. The more people that helped, the easier the work became. A job we were afraid might take days for the two of us alone was done in just a few hours. Many total strangers would either walk by the sidewalk or drive by to ask us if we were moving in. Many were delighted that this fine old house that had sat empty for so long was coming to life again. We were invited to an outdoor meal yesterday by neighbors on the same street.

All the while, I was thinking that people could be outgoing and kind to strangers. Among all the conversation were lots of offers to be of help to one another in a variety of ways. It’s wonderful to live in such a kind little town. I feel so grateful to be here, and wish the rest of the world could see how an entire community can model what it’s like to look out for (关照) one another. My new motto is, “I used to be in denial (拒绝), but now I live in Defiance!”

39. What can we learn about the author?

A. He hates to live in a little town. B. He enjoys living in Defiance now.

C. He used to be friendly to strangers. D. He usually offers some help to others.

40. The author mainly tells us that ________.

A. there is no place like home B. where there is a will, there is a way

C. kindness is the sunshine of social life

D. we don’t know what is good until we have lost it

The world of journalism can be very exciting. Journalists are on the cutting edge of local and global events. Before you take a big step for becoming a journalist, please make sure you are aware the climate for newspaper journalists is especially tough right now.

Once you are sure that a journalism career is right for you, here’s what you need to do.

● Education comes first. Besides understanding how to write well, a degree in journalism, English, or communications is also beneficial to those wishing to pursue a career in journalism. In addition to helping you gain the necessary knowledge, many universities offer employment services to new graduates. Attending journalism school, also called J-school, or journalism college is an investment in your future.

● Pick a specialty (专业). Jobs in journalism vary a lot, so it is important to decide exactly what path you wish to take. For newspaper reporters, you must be flexible and able to think on your feet because stories are often fast-breaking. Deadlines are typically tight, so be prepared to write with speed and accuracy (正确). There are also broadcast journalists, investigative reporters, foreign reporters, sports journalists and so on.

● You’ve got to have the right stuff. No matter which branch (分支) of journalism interests you, there are a number of necessary qualities that are common to all. Journalists must have a “nose for news”. Good journalists must use high ethics (高尚的道德规范) at all times. Additionally, a fair attitude is required for almost all areas of journalism; these jobs require a neutral (中立的) reporting of facts rather than opinions.

● Think big, but start small. Although internships (实习) during your last two years of college equip you with much experience, it is highly unlikely that your first job as a journalist will be high-paying. However, getting a job at a community newspaper or local television station is a good start. Once you are working in the field, you’ll have the chance to prove yourself and actively seek advancement.

Carnival is an annual (年度的) celebration of life found in many countries of the world. Hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic (天主教的) religion in Italy started the tradition of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent (大斋节). Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their festival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat”.

As time went by, carnivals in Italy spread to all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the French and Spanish began to take control of the Americas and other parts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating carnival.

Important to Caribbean festival arts are the ancient African traditions of parading and moving in circles through villages in costumes and masks. Circling villages was believed to bring good fortune and to solve problems. Carnival traditions also borrow from the African tradition of putting together natural objects (bones, grasses, shells) to create a mask, or costume — with each object representing a certain spiritual force. Feathers were frequently used by Africans in their motherland on masks and headdresses (头饰)as a symbol of ability as humans to rise above problems, pains, heartbreaks and illnesses. Today, we see feathers used in many, many forms in creating carnival costumes. African dance and music traditions also influenced the early carnival celebrations in the Americas and stilt (高跷) dancers began to make their appearances in the carnival festivities.

In order to put a carnival band together, it takes many weeks of preparation and lots of creativity, energy, and patience. Carnival offers all of us an active tool for self-expression and exploration, a tool to explore our roots, to develop new forms of looking at the world and its cultures, and finally, a tool to discover what we all have in common, and to celebrate what makes us different.

Expo, also known as World’s Fairs, is a large public exhibition held in turns in different cities in the world. The Expo is typically characterized by the National Pavilions (场馆), where participating countries would display their own architecture and exhibit their nations’ technologies and cultures. With such an exhibition, the World Expo generates global interests, attracting people all over the world.

The origin of the Expo comes from the French tradition of national exhibitions which started from 1844 in Paris. Soon other parts of Europe followed and held national exhibitions. It was in London on May 1st, 1851 that the first real international exhibition was held.

四、书面表达(共两节,满分45分)

第一节 阅读表达(第78题2分,第76、79、80题每题3分,第77题4分,满分15分)

阅读下面短文,并回答问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1] The world today is filled with so much violence, anger and apathy. If you have children, it is of great importance to be a positive leader of your family. Children grow up and are gone before you realize it. Don’t waste the time you have now. It is high time you should spend more quality time with your family.

[2] Some people can’t seem to find time to spend with their family. They don’t think it is __________. Others have other things that they think are higher on their list of priorities (优先,重点). Here are just a few reasons why family time is important.

[3] Family ties are important. I’ve often heard that the reason why so many kids decide to join gangs is that they welcome them in and then they become part of a family. They need to feel like they have someone they can turn to for anything. Spending time together as a family ensures the deep and strong family bond.

[4] With the startling numbers of marriages and divorces today, your children need to learn the importance of family values. Chances are your children will copy the exact behaviors you show towards them. If you are a careless parent, your children often show worse behaviors than those they were shown to. Spending family time together will build a sense of worth and instill (灌输) positive family values in your children.

[5] Do you want your children to learn important life lessons by having to experience pain? Of course, they will have to learn something on their own. But it is so important to have time for family discussion, where you can discuss some problems or situations on the table with your children.

[6] All these things lead to a very important point. By spending more quality time together as a family, you will build a stronger family unit. Your family will stick together through rough times, and enjoy fun times together as well.

Glad to have read your e-mail. The Lantern Festival in China is often referred to as the Chinese Carnival. It falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. Since the Han Dynasty, it has been a festival with great significance.

The important activity during the festival is watching lanterns. In the ancient times, lighting lanterns was celebrated by Buddhists. Later, the Buddhist celebration developed into a festival among common people. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in the streets and “Guessing lantern riddles” is an interesting part of the festival. People also eat yuanxiao—a sweet rice ball—and get all their families united in the joyful atmosphere.
