地道美语练习第1期:别那么悲观

J:材料虽然简单,但是大家可以跟读录音进行操练,提高发音.就算是很熟悉的表达也要反复诵读,达到运用自如的地步.

1 Don't be that negative

A:I always think everybody looks down on me.
我总觉得别人看不起我.

B:Don't be that negative.
别那么悲观.

A:How can you be optimistic? You can see it in their eyes.
你怎么能那么乐观?从他们的眼里我就能看出来.

B:I find it there is no meaning in living in this world.
我觉得活在这个世界上真没意思.

A:Don't be that negative.
别那么悲观.

B:Really, life is so boring.
真的,生活真无聊.

look down on somebody/something: to think that you are better than somebody/something 蔑视;轻视;瞧不起
She looks down on people who haven't been to college. 她瞧不起没上过大学的人.

类似表达:
Despise: to dislike and have no respect for somebody/something 鄙视;蔑视;看不起
She despised gossip in any form. 她对任何形式的流言蜚语都嗤之以鼻.
He despised himself for being so cowardly. 他为自己如此怯懦而自惭形秽.

There's no meaning in doing sth:做某事没意义
类似:there's no point in doing sth.

A: Why are you in such a hurry?
你那么急干什么?

B: I should finish it as soon as possible.
我要尽快完成.

A: Don't worry, do it step by step.
别急,一步一步来.

B: Why can't I learn it?
我怎么就学不会?

Step by step: gradually; in a gradual manner
类似表达: one thing at a time

Step在这里是"步,阶段"的意思.
I'd like to take this idea a step further. 我想把这一思想深化一步.
This was a big step up(= to a better position)in his career. 这是他在事业上向前迈出的一大步.
