逃亡途中，Manny和他的伙伴巧遇Ellie和她的负鼠弟弟们，双方发生了很多让人啼笑皆非的有趣故事。Manny想尽办法向Ellie示好，可是每次都事与愿违。他们能否消除误会，最终在一起呢？
(1) Look, we'll never make it in time if we only travel at night. 听着，我们如果只能晚上走，一定赶不及。
——Manny一行遇到吊在树上的Ellie，虽然一时不能说服她，让她对“自己是一只猛犸象”有清醒的认识，但是Ellie考虑到洪水的步步紧逼，决定和Manny同行。Make it是一个在口语中经常使用的动词词组，意思是“达到预定目标，及时抵达，走完路程，（病痛等）好转”，例如：He puts grease on his hair to make it shiny. 他给头发擦上发油使它发亮。Although she scrubbed the old pot thoroughly, she could not make it look completely clean. 虽然她用力擦洗那只旧壶，但无法把它彻底洗干净。He larded the duck with pig fat to make it tasty. 他给鸭肉加了点猪油使它美味可口。The train goes at10.15. I think we shall make it. 火车10点1刻开，我想我们能赶上。
(2) He has a point. 他说得对。
——集体中有人出于对负鼠的恐惧而不愿意接纳Ellie，但是考虑到Ellie很有可能是最后一只除Manny之外的猛犸象了，最终集体包容了Ellie和她的负鼠弟弟们。“说得对”尽管简单，但是有很多表达法，例如：1. Say well. 说得不错！2. You said it! 你说得对! 3. "Well said,” put in Uncle Wang. 王大叔插话说：“说得对。”4. You're right. 你说得对。5. What you say makes sense. 你说的很有道理/言之有理。
(3) Manny sure took a big leap with Ellie today. 曼尼和艾丽今天进展神速。
——经过长时间的相处，Manny和Ellie终于有了共同的语言，Ellie也开始相信自己是猛犸象了。Leap兼有名词和动词的意思，表示“跳跃，剧增，急变，猛冲”，例如：There has been a great leap in the number of births in these past five years. 这五年来，出生人数有很大的增长。类似的，“进展”可以用to make headway/ progress来表达，如：The intercession has made a rapid progress. 调解已经取得了很大的进展。
(4) What if we're the last creatures left alive? We'll have to repopulate the Earth. 万一我们是物种的最后两个，我们得重新繁衍。
——负鼠兄弟睡过了头，看到四周的冰川正在快速融化，他们悲观地认为他们的末日到了。What if… 表示一种假设，也可翻译为“要是……该怎么办？”、“如果……将会怎么样”，在日常生活中很实用，例如：1. What if it is true? 如果这是真的又该如何呢？2. What if he doesn't agree? 如果他不同意该怎么办呢？3. What if the boy's parents should die? 如果那男孩的父母死了该怎么办呢？Repopulate做动词表示“重新构成……的人口”， 后接the Earth强调重新繁衍的数量之多，任务之大。
(5) You are so stubborn and hard-headed. 你简直太固执了！
——面对前有熔岩后有洪水的危急局面，Manny和Ellie做出了相反的选择，一个赞成前进，一个主张后退，双方不欢而散。Stubborn形容“顽固的，倔强的”，例如：You might as well talk to a stone as try to argue with a stubborn woman.你与其跟一个倔女人争吵，还不如对一块石头说话。同义词有obstinate：Only a man full of the milk of human kindness could have continued to befriend the proud and obstinate young man. 只有天性善良的人才会和这个性情高傲脾气倔强的年轻人继续交往。
