The reSearchers looked at data on smokers in 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2015, and found that the daily smoking rates in men fell from 35% in 1990 to 25% in 2015, while the rates in women dropped from 8% in 1990 to 5% in 2015.

"Robust tobacco control efforts have led to progress in reducing the deadly habit of smoking, but much more can be done," said senior author Dr. Emmanuela Gakidou, Professor of Global Health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle.
