A son whose mother was burned to death by his vicious step-father is determined to help other kids trapped by abusers. Heartbroken Kyle Braund said violent drunk Raymond O'Connell had left him too afraid to speak out as he grew up.

O'Connell, now jailed for life, used violence to control them and that is why he is supporting the Mirror's Christmas appeal in aid to give kids in abusive homes someone to turn to.

"I am haunted by what happened to her" he says. "He broke her ribs, cheekbone and nose. His abuse was relentless." After losing his big sister in a house fire when he was a baby, mum Lynne was the only family Kyle had left. Even more horrifically, O'Connell killed Lynne in the worst way possible for a mother who has lost a child to fire - by dousing her in lighter fluid and setting her ablaze.

Now a precious framed photo of a smiling lady takes pride of place on the mantelpiece in Kyle's home - one of the few mementoes he has left of Lynne, murdered at the age of 54. Kyle, 27, from Barry, South Wales, says O'Connell also viciously beat him after he came into their lives when Kyle was 10.

And while Kyle is rebuilding his life thanks to girlfriend Charlotte Perry, 29, who "has taught me what love and a beautiful relationship is all about", his ordeal will never truly leave him. At the moment only three quarters of the calls, texts and online contacts to the counselling service are picked up. But a donation of ?4 could help the 20 calls an hour currently unanswered.

"The NSPCC do such an amazing job helping vulnerable children," Kyle says. "It's very worrying though how many calls go unanswered because of a lack of funds. I hope people will dig deep and make sure all calls are answered.

"I wish I'd been able to call a helpline like the NSPCC when I was a child. Charities like this can make the difference between life and death for a child who is suffering abuse and has no one to turn to."
