They huddled inside the storm door — two children in ragged outgrown coats.

"Any old papers, lady?"

I was busy. I wanted to say no — until I looked down at their feet. Thin little sandals, soppedwith sleet.

"Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa."

There was no conversation. Their soggy sandals left marks upon the hearthstone.

I served them cocoa and toast with jam to fortify against the chill outside.

Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.

The silence in the front room struck through to me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup inher hands, looking at it.

The boy asked in a flat voice," Lady ... are you rich?"

"Am I rich? Mercy, no!" I looked at my shabby slipcovers.

The girl put her cup back in its saucer — carefully.

"Your cups match your saucers."

Her voice was old, with a hunger that was not of the stomach.

They left then, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you.

They didn't need to. They had done more than that. Plain blue pottery cups and saucers. Butthey matched.

I tested the potatoes and stirred the gravy.

Potatoes and brown gravy, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job — thesethings matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and tidied the living room.

The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my hearth. I let them be.

I want them there in case I ever forget again how very rich I am.

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carriedacross his neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a fullportion of water.

At the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrivedonly half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full ofwater to his master's house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which itwas made.

But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it wasable to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one dayby the stream.

"I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."

"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack inmy side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house.

Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from yourefforts," the pot said.

The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said,

"As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."

Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming thebeautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some.

But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again itapologized to the bearer for its failure.

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of yourpath, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every daywhile we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able topick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way youare, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."

The lobster and the crab began their voyage. Soon they found themselves far from shore.

Their boat was tossed and buffeted by the turbulent waters. "Crab! " shouted the lobster above the roar of the wind.

"Yes, of course, we are sinking, ' said the lobster. “This old boat is full of holes. Have courage, my friend. Remember, we are both creatures of the sea."

The little boat capsized and sank. " Horrors ! " cried the crab. "Down we go!" shouted the lobster. The crab was shaken and upset.

The lobster took him for a relaxing walk along the ocean floor. "How brave we are," said the lobster "What a wonderful adventure we have had The crab began to feel somewhat better.

Although he uauslly enjoyed a quieter existence, he had to admit that the day had been pleasantly out of the ordinary
