Ford gripped the seams like a maniac.
福特像个疯子似的攥紧毛巾。
They were still descending, but the rate had slowed.
他们还在下落，但速度已经开始减慢。
‘Up, Colin!’ he shouted.
“往上，科林！”他大声喊。
Nothing.
没有反应。
‘Your name,’ shouted Ford, ‘is Colin. So when I shout “Up, Colin!” I want you, Colin, to go up. OK? Up, Colin!’
“你的名字，”福特喊道，“叫做科林。所以当我喊‘往上，科林！’的时候，我要你，科林，往上飞。明白？往上，科林！”
Nothing. Or rather a sort of muffled groaning sound from Colin. Ford was very anxious. They were descending very slowly now, but Ford was very anxious about the sort of people he could see assembling on the ground beneath him. Friendly, local, wocket-hunting types were dispersing, and thick, heavy, bull-necked, slug-like creatures with rocket launchers were, it seemed, sliding out of what was usually called thin air. Thin air, as all experienced Galactic travellers well know, is, in fact, extremely thick with multi-dimensional complexities.
还是没有反应。或者说反应是有的，不过却只是科林闷闷的呻吟。福特很焦虑。现在他们下落的速度已经非常慢了，但让福特焦虑的其实是他自己脚底下聚集起来的那些个人。土生土长，亲切友好，狩猎毛怪的那种人正在四下散开，大个，粗壮，牛脖的鼻涕虫类型则扛着导弹发射器从通常被大家叫做空气的那种东西里钻出来。说到空气，所有经验丰富的银河系漫游者都知道，它其实并不空，里头净是满满当当，错综复杂的多维物体。
‘Up,’ bellowed Ford again. ‘Up! Colin, go up!’
“上！”福特再次怒吼，“上！，科林，往上！”
Colin was straining and groaning. They were now more or less stationary in the air. Ford felt as if his fingers were breaking.
科林哼哼唧唧地拼命使力。现在他们或多或少定在了半空。福特觉得自己的手指快断了。
‘ Up!’
“上！”
They stayed put.
他们没动。
