地道俚语｜“give sb hell”是“给人地狱”？

今天学习一组和hell有关的俚语，哇哦，有点怕怕。

from hell

我们用“from hell”形容（某人或某事）特别糟的，比如：

Now Miranda - she was the housemate from hell.

哎，米兰达——她是个特别糟的室友。

make sb's life hell

如果你make sb's life hell或者make life hell for sb，这也是个很糟糕的情况了，说明你让别人的生活像“人间地狱”，形容给（某人）惹很多麻烦，让（某人）日子不好过。比如：

I worked for her for two years and she made my life hell.

我给她打了两年工，她让我的日子很不好过。

hell on earth

这就是真正的“人间地狱”，英语释义是“an extremely unpleasant place or situation”，用来形容那些让人无比痛苦的地方，比如：

Soldiers who survived the war described it as hell on earth.

这场战争中幸存下来的士兵称之为人间地狱。

give sb hell

当然不是给某人地狱，它有这两个意思，第一是严厉批评（某人）：

She gave me hell for being 20 minutes late.

因为我迟到了20分钟，她狠狠训了我一顿。

第二是使（某人）受苦，形容被折磨：

These new shoes are giving me hell.

这双新鞋把我的脚磨得疼死了。

come hell or high water

这个短语拿来表决心，意思是“无论有什么困难，不管怎样”。

I'll get you to the airport by noon, come hell or high water!

不论有什么困难，我都会在中午前把你送到机场！
