Sir Edmund Hillary was born in 1919 and grew up in Auckland. Hillary was educated at Tuakau Primary School and then Auckland Grammar School. He finished primary school two years early and at high school achieved average marks. He was smaller than his classmates there and was very shy so he buried himself in his books and daydreams of a life filled with adventure. At 16 his interest in climbing started during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu.

Edmund Hillary joined in Everest reconnaissance (勘测) in 1951 and again in 1952, as well as an unsuccessful act of trying to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. The New Zealander made history when he succeeded in climbing Mount Everest with his Nepalese partner in May 1953. He was the first man to climb the world’s tallest mountain.

After climbing the 8,850 meter peak, Hillary led a number of expeditions (探险) to the South Pole and devoted his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal’s Khumbu region. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the explorer was an inspiration to generations. “Sir Edmund’s name is in connection with adventure, with achievement, with dreaming and then making those dreams come true,” she said. “I’m sure there will be many Australians today who reflect on his death. It was obviously a long life and well lived.”

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Air pollution is a major risk factor for heart disease, and women with diabetes (糖尿病) may be more likely to be influenced by its effects than others, a long-term U.S. study said Wednesday.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that women with diabetes who are exposed (暴露) to air pollution for long periods may have a much higher risk for heart disease.

“We didn’t expect diabetes to be the strongest factor in determining susceptibility (敏感性),” said the lead author Jaime Hart, an epidemiologist at the Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

“We looked at age, family history of heart disease, weight, smoking status and areas of the country but diabetes was the most consistent across diseases and across different size fractions of particulate matter (PM),” Hart said.

The research team explored data from more than 100,000 participants in a long-term study called the Nurses’ Health Study, looking at rates of heart disease, specifically rates of stroke.

They assessed long-term exposure to three different sizes of particulate matter air pollution from 1989 to 2006: Fine particulate pollutant smaller than 2.5 thousandths of a millimeter in diameter (PM2.5), PM10 and PM2.5-10. PM10 includes both PM2.5 and PM2.5-10.

While all women had small increases in risk of heart events with more air pollution exposure, the increased risk was statistically significant for women with diabetes.

According to the team, an increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air pollution in PM2.5, PM2.5-10 and PM 10 will raise a woman’s risk of heart disease by 44 percent, 17 percent and 19 percent, separately, if she had type 2 diabetes.

The team found that these effects were greater among women 70 and older and obese women.

Since the study participants were mostly white women of middle- and upper-socioeconomic status, further research will be needed to determine if these patterns are also seen in men and in racially and socioeconomically diverse populations, they added.

61. According to the study, women with diabetes may be more likely to be affected by_______.

A. a risk factor B. air pollution C. heart disease D. areas

62. Which of the following was not involved in the study?

A. Age. B. Weight. C. Height. D. Smoking status.

63. What can we learn from the passage?

A. It is not necessary to do further research on men.

B. Air pollution puts women with diabetes at higher heart risk.

C. Most participants were women who were over 70 years old.

D. The increase of PM per cubic meter has no effect on women’s health.

64. In a newspaper, this passage is most probably in the part of _______.

A. Travel B. Technology C. Health D. Fashion

D

Dear Max,

Your mother and I don’t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.

Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. While newspapers often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. The number of poor families is decreasing. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be much better than ours today.

We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a responsibility to all children in the next generation. We believe all lives have equal value. Our society has its duty to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here.

Today, most people die from five things — heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases — and we can make faster progress on these and other problems. Once we recognize that your generation and your children’s generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to increase our investments (投资) a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part. Curing disease will take time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we’re making much of a difference. But over the long term, seeds planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children will see what we can only imagine: a world without suffering from disease.

There are so many opportunities just like this. If society focuses more of its energy on these great challenges, we will leave your generation a much better world. Our hopes for your
generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential (潜能) and equality. Our society must do this not only for justice or charity, but for the greatness of human progress.

Today your mother and I are devoted to spending our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges. I, Zuckerberg, will continue to serve as Facebook’s CEO for many, many years to come, but these things are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work.

We will give away 99% of our Facebook shares — now about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these matters. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others.

As we become parents and enter this next chapter(篇章)of our lives, we want to share our deep appreciation for everyone who makes this possible. We can make progress towards these opportunities only by standing on the shoulders of experts. And we can only focus on serving this community and this mission because we are surrounded by loving family, supportive friends and amazing colleagues. We hope you will have such deep and inspiring relationships in your life too.

Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.

Love,

Mom and Dad

The first of the 2015 Nobel Prizes has been announced. Sweden’s Nobel Prize committee said the Nobel Prize for medicine would go to Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan for their discoveries concerning a therapy against malaria(疟疾). The prize for medicine was also going to Chinese researcher Tu Youyou. Campbell and Omura were honored for their anti-roundworm treatment, while Tu came up with a new drug for malaria.

Tu, born in 1930, graduated from the Beijing Medical College in 1955. She is a chief researcher and professor at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is also the first Chinese citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine. In the 1970s, Tu carried out the research, resulting in the discovery of artemisinin(青蒿素), a drug that has considerably cut the number of malaria deaths and saved millions of lives. The treatment is based on a herb used in Chinese traditional medicine, called sweet wormwood.

Tu got the award for three “firsts”. She was the first to bring artemisinin to her project team, the first to extract (提炼) a form of artemisinin that can altogether prevent malaria, and the first to complete a clinical trial, according to Zhang Boli, director of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.

The committee said the discoveries had given the world powerful new ways to fight malaria which affects hundreds of millions of people every year. The committee added that, “The results in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable.”

“It is a gift for the world people from the traditional Chinese medicine. It is of great importance for curing malaria and other infectious diseases and for protecting the health of the world people.” Tu said in Beijing. “The discovery of artemisinin is a successful example of teamwork on traditional Chinese medicine. The prize winning is an honor for China’s science cause and traditional Chinese medicine in their course of reaching out to the world.”

“Tu’s winning the prize signifies China’s prosperity and progress in scientific and technological field, marks a great contribution of traditional Chinese medicine to the cause of human health, and shows China’s growing strengths and rising international standing.” Premier Li Keqiang said in a congratulatory letter Monday evening.

Recently, a primary school in Xiangyang, Hubei province has added square dancing to their curriculum, which caused a heated discussion in our school. Students have different views on it.

70% of the students are in favor of it, holding that not only can square dancing help them relax themselves but also it can make them have a slim figure. What’s more, music dance combined with physical exercise is a good way for teenagers to get into shape. However, 30% of the students have the opposite opinion that
square dancing is the dance of Dama, which requires less energy. Thus, it is not a good choice for them.

On a personal note, I have strong desire to learn square dancing with classmates in school, for traditional gymnastics is too boring to inspire the students’ enthusiasm for working out. In addition, students can learn to cooperate with each other. Maybe this would be a way to build the school spirit with an activity that many students enjoy.(151words)
