The owners of a restaurant in Alaska won international praise after defending their clerk with autism (孤僻症). Autism is a disorder that makes relationships and talking to others difficult. Ancient people knew that some kinds of clay have qualities to cure. They applied clay to their skin to cover wounds. They also used the natural rock or soil material to treat stomach problems.

Now, American researchers have discovered how different clays work as medicine. Blue and green clays are found in volcanic areas of the world. Around volcanoes, native peoples used the clays to improve their health. It seems they knew what they were doing.

Lynda Williams is a clay and mineral scientist. She and her research team have been studying the native people of Australia. “There is evidence of the natives using clays for treating wounds and they eat them. Many cultures eat clays to settle their stomach.”

Williams and her team found the clay was effective against some bacteria that cause diseases. In laboratory tests, they saw how a blue-colored clay is effective against MRS A, a dangerous and sometimes deadly skin infection (感染). The clay was also effective in treating Buruli ulcer, a skin disease found in the Ivory Coast.

Here is how the blue clay works. Iron is one of the chemicals found in the clay. The bacteria need the iron to survive. Some of these same clays also contain aluminum. The minerals work together. Aluminum attacks the proteins (蛋白质)in the cell wall of the bacterium, lets iron flood into harmful bacteria and has reactions with the protein inside. The iron oxidizes (氧化)inside and then kills the bacteria.

Williams says she hopes the study will interest drug companies that want to explore the medical

An Ocean Vacuum (真空吸尘器)

There’s a collection of plastic rubbish in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s bigger than Texas and growing. The way to clean it up now is to trap it with a net. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project comes up with a 62-mile-long floating barrier that can use natural currents (潮流)to trap rubbish. If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the rubbish by 42% over 10 years.

Easy-On Shoes

In 2012, Matthew Walzer, a high school student with a disability, sent a note to Nike. “My dream is to go to college without having to worry about someone coming to tie my shoes every day.” Nike appointed a design team to the challenge. This year, they came out with their solution: the Flyease Style. The basketball shoe can be fastened with one hand. The idea came from “opening and closing a door,”says Tobie Hatfield, the shoe’s head designer.

The Underground Park The Lowline is an abandoned trolleybus terminal in New York City. Barasch and architect James Ramsey are trying to turn it into green space.
