A former heroin addict has revealed the horrific toll the drug took on his life - robbing him of his teeth and leaving him suicidal. David started out as a teenage drug dealer but just a few small bad decisions left him battling a severe addiction. The habit cost him everything.

He attempted suicide, before being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. But even then he managed to smuggle in a stash of drugs and ended up getting all the patients on the dangerous situation.

He did 23 stints in prison and was banned from every store in Ashton-under-Lyne as he shoplifted to fund his heroin and crack cocaine addiction. Now, he has turned his life around.

He's been drug-free for six months. And he's helping other escape the same nightmare. David, 37, began selling drugs after going off the rails and falling in with dealers. He does not want to reveal his surname because of the shame his addiction brought on his family. But he wants to others to know his inspiring story.

A single bad decision set David's life on a downward spiral. A group of friends decided to 'tax' a cannabis dealer of his crop, and he went with them. But the target got assaulted - and David and his friends were prosecuted. He got a short custodial sentence, going in to young offenders as a bit of a tearaway, but criminally naive.

He emerged with an education in serious crime. He told the Manchester Evening News: "I was encouraged to sell heroin. It was crazy. I was 18 and had a shoebox with ?18,000 under my bed. I thought I was untouchable." Then he made another, catastrophic miscalculation.

"I thought I'd give what I was selling a go," he said. "I believed I'd be the exception, the one that could use the drug successfully. How wrong was I." He quickly became dependent.
