Six Months after leaks by Edward Snowden kicked off a stream of disclosures about National Security Agency activities, Snowden tells the Washington Post that he's satisfied that he helped spark a public debate about the limits of U.S. surveillance.

From the interview, published online Monday:

'For me, in terms of personal satisfaction, the mission's already accomplished,' he said. 'I already won.

'As soon as the journalists were able to work, everything that I had been trying to do was validated. Because, remember, I didn't want to change society. I wanted to give society a chance to determine if it should change itself.'

In a story generated by more than 14 hours of interviews with the Washington Post, Snowden also talks a bit about his life in Russia, which granted him temporary asylum this summer. The 30-year-old former NSA contractor describes himself as an 'indoor cat,' who spends his days greeting a stream of visitors, surfing the Web and chowing on ramen noodles and chips.

In the Post interview, Snowden also said that before he left the U.S. with a cache of NSA documents, he tested agency employees to see whether they shared his worries about the overreach of spying efforts:

'I asked these people, 'What do you think the public would do if this was on the front page?'' he said. He noted that critics have accused him of bypassing internal channels of dissent. 'How is that not reporting it? How is that not raising it?' he said.
