WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange made a brief speech on the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Sunday, equating himself to political prisoners in other countries and avoiding any mention of the sexual-assault allegations he faces in Sweden.

Ecuador granted Mr. Assange political asylum last week, and his brief appearance was set up in a way that would allow him to speak publicly without leaving the embassy and risking immediate arrest by British police officers stationed there.

U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague said last week that Britain wouldn't guarantee safe passage for Mr. Assange, and reiterated his intent to uphold the U.K.'s obligation to extradite the WikiLeaks boss.

Mr. Assange was arrested in the U.K. in December 2010 on a European warrant requested by Sweden. Swedish authorities want to question him about allegations that he raped one woman and molested another during a visit to Stockholm in 2010.

He denies the allegations, and hasn't been charged with a crime.

Mr. Assange fought a long court battle to avoid extradition; when his legal options ran out this summer, he sought asylum at Ecuador's embassy.

Ecuador has said it wants to protect him from political persecution Mr. Assange believes he faces-a theme the WikiLeaks founder returned to Sunday, accusing the U.S. of conducting a 'witch hunt' against WikiLeaks.

The WikiLeaks founder has long suggested that the Swedish investigation is politically motivated and backed by Washington as a way to speed what he contends would be his eventual extradition to the U.S., where he says he would be tried for publishing thousands of classified U.S. government documents.

The U.S. hasn't charged Mr. Assange with a crime or issued an extradition request for him.

U.S. authorities have investigated whether Mr. Assange or others working for WikiLeaks did anything to encourage the accused leaker of the government documents, Pfc. Bradley Manning, people familiar with the matter have said.

But U.S. officials have said that it would be difficult to prosecute Mr. Assange, in part because they have found little evidence that he induced Pfc. Manning to leak the documents.

In his speech on Sunday, Mr. Assange nonetheless suggested that U.S. charges against him were imminent.

'The United States must vow that it will not seek to prosecute our staff or our supporters,' he told a crowd of television cameras and supporters from the balcony. 'The U.S. administration's war on whistleblowers must end.'

The U.K. and Sweden have expressed increasing exasperation with Mr. Assange, saying he is wanted for questioning on allegations of serious sexual assault.

Both countries deny their extradition efforts have any link to the U.S.

Claes Borgstrom, a lawyer for the two Swedish women, has criticized Mr. Assange, calling his refusal to return to Sweden a 'tragedy' for the women.
