The neuroscience graduate student suspected of Friday's mass shooting in a Colorado movie theater had mailed a notebook with drawings of a massacre to a University of Colorado psychiatrist, but the package wasn't opened until after the deadly attack, according to a law-enforcement official.

In a statement Wednesday, the university said mail is delivered on the day it is received, except for mail received on Saturday, which is delivered on Monday.

Authorities say that shortly after the film began, he set off canisters emitting an acrid smoke and opened fire on theatergoers, who realized too late it was not a stunt related to the movie.
