伦敦街头增派600名武装警察防恐

London’s police force is placing 600 extra armed officers on the capital’s streets in response to fears about the threat of Isis-linked terror attacks.

The deployment will increase the number of armed officers in the city’s Metropolitan Police to 2,800 and will double the number of counter-terrorism patrols in the city.

The move has been prompted by a series of terror attacks in European cities, although officials said it was not in response to a specific threat.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, Met police commissioner, said: “Anyone who’s been following events in Europe over the past few weeks will understand why we want to show our determination to protect the public.”

An additional ￡25m to increase the number of armed counter-terrorism police was announced by Sir Bernard early this year — part of ￡34m of extra money for armed response measures across the UK, known as Operation Hercules.

The latest armed recruits will allow the Met to better structure its forces around a set of rapid response units — totalling 300-400 officers — who will be able to be deployed anywhere in London at short notice. In the past, an armed security presence in the capital has been increased periodically following terrorist incidents or in response to intelligence about potential targets. In 2014 for example, armed police and soldiers were deployed in Whitehall after a series of plots targeting military personnel were foiled.

About 800 Britons have travelled to fight with Isis and other radical groups in Syria and Iraq. Half have returned and are being monitored by MI5, the internal security service.
