CHENGDU, China -- Yun Zi was nervously exploringhis new Chinese home Sunday, pacing back and forth and peeping over the top ofgrass verge at the curious staff who'll now be looking after was a little jet-lagged, perhaps, after twodays travel half way around the world from his birthplace in Southern four-and-a-half-year-old giant panda wasborn in San Diego Zoo, where he's been something of a star. But unlike withpeople, pandas born in Americadon't have the right to only are all adult pandas in American zoosowned by Chinaand leased at a hefty fee, but any cubs have to be returned.

First point of call for Yun Zi (which means"Son of Cloud") was a new Giant Panda Conservation and Disease ControlCenter in Dujiangyan, near Chengdu, the capital of China'sSichuanprovince. He'll be quarantined here for a month."It can take quite a long time toadapt," says Wei Rongping, the center's director. From the food to thecooler temperature to the keepers -- its all different. Even the language."How would Americans pronounce hisname?" asked Yang Haidi, who'll be looking after him on a day-to-daybasis, and was trying, without much success, to get Yun Zi's attention.

Four U.S. zoos lease pandas, which arecritically endangered, and very popular new Dujiangyan center will soon be home to30 pandas -- mostly sick or injured and in need of rehab. There are also someyoungsters between six months and one and a half years, as they are mostvulnerable to of Yun Zi's neighbors is 28-year-old QianQian, who was found in the wild with two broken a used to give pandas as gifts. Since the mid-1980s they are only allowedto be leased, though the granting of leases frequently mirrors China'sdiplomatic y are currently out on rent, and rentalshave been estimated at $1 million per panda per year. A cub incurs an extracost, and can be recalled at any time once they turn can seem like an exercise in soft power(everybody seems gaga about pandas) and hard cash, though China insistsits all about about 1,600 pandas are believed to be inleft in the wild in Yun Zi isn't the only giant panda to arrivein Chengdu inrecent days with a certain American pedigree.
