China Warns Google On Content

A Chinese government-backed Internet watchdog admonished Google Inc. on Thursday for allowing access to pornography through its Chinese Web site.

In a statement, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center said pornographic images could still be found through the Google China Web site, despite earlier warnings from the center in January and April.

The brief statement accused Google's Chinese site, , of 'disseminating large amounts of pornographic and vulgar information,' but provided no specific examples. It called on the company to eliminate objectionable material, and recommended that 'the relevant legal authorities' punish the company, without elaborating.

A Google spokesman said in a statement that the company has been 'continually working to deal with pornographic content -- and material that is harmful to children -- on the Web in China.' He added, 'After seeing the government's announcement this morning, Google has renewed this effort.'

Chinese officials have delivered similar warnings to Internet companies, including Google, in recent years. China's government tries to block the country's 300 million Internet users from seeing content officials find objectionable, from pornography to criticism of the Communist Party.

The government has recently moved to tighten the system, indicating that it plans to require that all personal computers sold in the country be shipped with software that blocks access to certain Web sites.

Google started its Chinese Web site in 2006 to accommodate Chinese censorship requirements. The Chinese site filters out some sensitive material from its search results.
