In the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a farmer who was impatient by nature. He thought his rice shoots(嫩枝) were growing too slowly, so he decided to help them by pulling them.

One day at dusk, he went back home dog-tired and said to his family: "I helped the rice shoots grow today." Hearing this, his son hurried to the field, only to find that all the plants hadwithered(干枯) .

This idiom refers to spoiling things because of being over-anxious for results and ignoring the law of nature.

The emperor of the Qin Dynasty trusted treacherous(奸诈的) ministers, and therefore lost his state." He compared kings and emperors to racoons(浣熊) living on the same mountain.

This idiom refers derogatorily(减损地) to people who are of the same kind.

In the warring States Period, the State of Zhao had a famous general called Zhao She, whose son, Zhao Kuo, was very fond of reading books on military science and discussing strategy. He could recite military texts by heart, and when discussing warfare he spoke so clearly and logically that it seemed that even his father was not his match. When the State of Qin attacked the State of Zhao, the ruler of Zhao ordered Zhao Kuo to lead 400,000 men to resist(抵抗)the attack. But since Zhao Kuo had no practical experience of battle, he was defeated and lost his life.

Later people used this idiom to describe those who are good only at theorizing, and lack practical experience.

Long ago a lion and a bear saw a kid. They sprang upon it at the same time. The lion said to the bear, "I caught this kid first, and so this is mine."

"No, no," said the bear. "I found it earlier than you, so this is mine." And they fought long andfiercely. At last both of them got very tired and could no longer fight.

A fox who hid himself behind a tree not far away and was watching the fight between the lion and the bear, came out and walked in between them, and ran off(逃跑) with the kid.

The lion and the bear both saw the fox, but they could not even catch the fox.

The lion said to the bear, "We have fought for nothing. That sly fox has got the kid away."
