The Trojan Horse

Many years ago,the king of Troy had a son.

His name was Paris. Paris fell in love with Helen.

But she was the beautiful wife of the Greek king.

Paris took Helen to Troy anyway.

The Greek king asked Tory to give back his wife.

The Trojan king refused.

So the Greek king became angry and sent his army to Troy.

The Greek soldiers camped around the city of Tory for ten years!

The Greeks and Trojans fought many battles.

But the siege didn't work. Neither country won the war.

Helen of Troy still lived with Paris.

The commander of the Greek army said,

"We have been here ten years.

We need a new strategy to help us win the war."

Suddenly,a Greek soldier came up with an idea.

"I have an idea! Let's pretend to go home in our ships.

The Trojans will think that we have given up and that the war is over."

"And then what?" asked the commander.

The soldier whispered his plan to the commander.

The commander nodded his head and said,

"Hmm. It is a daring strategy. But I believe the plan will work!

Let's start building a huge wooden horse!"

Finally, the huge wooden horse was ready.

Some brave Greek soldiers climbed inside the horse.

Then, other soldiers pushed the horse closer to the gates of the city.

"We are giving up. You win! Here is a gift for you,"

a Greek soldier shouted.

Then,the Greek soldiers sailed away.

"Father, stay away from the horse. It's a trick!" Paris said to his father.

"Hmm. You are right. We should be careful.

First, let's wait and see if it is a trick," answered the Trojan king.

The Trojans didn't believe the Greek soldiers.

At that time, one of the soldiers brought a Greek soldier to the Trojan king and said,

"Your Majesty,I caught this Greek soldier around the city gate.

He must be a spy. We have to kill him."

"Oh,no. Please, save my life. Then I will tell you everything you want to know,"

begged the captured Greek soldier.

"OK,then. Why did they leave the wooden horse here?" asked the Trojan king.

The Greek soldier responded,

"As you know, they were exhausted. So they wanted to retreat safely.

Since they did not want you to go after them while they retreated,

they decided to give you a gift as a war trophy.

That's all I know. Please,save my life!"

"Is this a war trophy? Ha,ha,ha! The poor Greeks!

Bring in the wooden horse!" ordered the king.

The huge wooden horse was finally brought into the city.

But just in case it was a Greek trick, the Trojans searched for a secret opening,

but nothing was found.

The horse was wonderfully made.

"The horse is safe to have in the city!

We have won the war! Ha,ha!" the people of Troy declared.

The soldiers and citizens of Troy began to celebrate.

They thought they had won the war!

But no one noticed that the Greek spy smiled

and waited for all the Trojan soldiers to get drunk.

All the citizens and soldiers of Troy drank and drank until after dark.

Soon, they were all drunk. Then, they all fell asleep. "Zzzz!"

The Greek spy watched and waited for this moment.

Then,he quietly approached the horse and opened

the hidden door in the belly of the horse.

A few Trojan guards stood by the city gates.

But they sere half drunk and asleep too.

The Greek soldiers overpowered the guards quickly and opened the city gates.

The Greek soldiers started fires all over the city.

The Trojans awakened in surprised and shouted,"Fire! Fire!"

The Greek ships had brought the Greek army back during the night.

The Trojans saw the Greek soldiers pour into the city!

"No!" they cried.

The Trojans were completely surprised by the attack.

Some ran away. Some fought with the Greeks.

But it was too late. The Greeks had finally conquered Troy.

The story of the Trojan horse was said to be written by the Greek poet,Homer.

Little is known about him Was this a real Trojan war?

The Trojan horse was believed to be a myth.

The war was said to be imaginary.

But according to archeological discoveries,

a real war between the Greeks and Trojans did happen.

Troy was destroyrd, and the Greeks won!

At a wedding party Eris, the goddess of discord, threw a golden apple bearing the words “For the fairest!" Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, each wanting to get it for herself, were sent to Paris for judgement. A shepherd on Mt Ida, Paris gave the apple to Aphrodite because she had promised to obtain for him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris was the son of Priam, the king of Troy. At his birth his mother Queen Hecuba dreamed of holding a piece of burning wood. So he was regarded as likely to bring destruction on the city, and was by chance exposed to the sun, wind and rain on Mt. Ida. He was finally saved and brought up by the herdsmen there. Now acting on the instruction of Aphrodite, he went down the mountain to take part in the game held in Troy, and there so famous did he become that King Priam and Queen Hecuba received him joyfully back into the royal palace.

Soon he was sent to Greece at the head of a great team of boats. He went to Sparta, where, as Aphrodite had told him, the most beautiful woman of the time, Helen, lived. King Menelaus, Helen's husband, generously received him but Paris returned his host's kindness with no thanks. In the king's absence he persuaded Helen to elope with him to Troy. To pay back, Greek took up arms. The Trojan war broke out.

As the Greek ships gathered at the port of Aulis, no favouring wind blew up. A prophet told the commander of the expedition, Agamemnon, that he had to offer his daughter Iphigenia as a sacrifice to Artemis. Iphigenia was placed before the goddess' altar but Artemis took her away at the last minute, putting a red deer(赤鹿) in her place. Agamemnon's wife Clytemnestra was greatly enraged at her husband's cruelty.

The war lasted ten years, during which both sides suffered the misfortunes of war. Agamemnon fought with Achilles over a captive princess, and in anger, Achilles refused to fight. His friend, Patroclus, borrowed his armour and went out to change the situation of war, but was killed by Hector, the eldest son of Priam. Bent on revenge, Achilles no longer fought with Agamemnon, and putting on his new armour made by Hephaestus, went out to avenge his friend. He killed Hector and dragged his dead body three times around the walls of Troy. But soon after, Achilles was wounded in the heel by Paris and died in battle. Paris had not long to live either, for he was killed by a friend of Achilles'. As Achilles left his armour to the bravest of the Greeks, a bitter struggle happened between its two worthy contestants; and when the weapons were given to Odysseus by judge, Ajax took his own life for grief and shame.

At the end of nine years a prophet predicted that Troy would not fall as long as the Palladium stayed within its walls. Odysseus and Diomedes went into the city in disguise and stole it out of the temple of the city. Then the Greeks designed a great wooden horse, in which some Greek soldiers hid themselves, and made believe to withdraw. Taken in by rumour that the horse had been sent by Athena, the overjoyed Trojans hauled it into their capital. At night the hidden Greeks crawled out and threw the whole city into confusion. Tory was robbed. King Priam was killed. Queen Hecuba, her daughter Cassandra and her daughter-in-law Andromache were all carried into slavery. Helen and Menelaus were on good terms again and disappeared in the west. Agamemnon went back to Mycenae, only to be murdered by his own wife. His son Orestes killed his mother and was pursued by the Furies. Odysseus went through untold hardships, struggling with wind and wave, before he reached his home island Ithaca to reunite with his faithful wife Penelope. Aeneas, one of the Trojan princes, after narrowly escaping death at Troy, wandered from land to land for a long time and became, in the end, the founder of the Roman race.
