Robert Bruce was king of Scotland in the early 14th century. He fought in many battles with the English to make them allow Scotland to be independent. Sometimes he won, but at other times the English won and he had to hide. On one of these times, according to an old story, he was hiding in Ireland and had almost given up hope of beating the English. He had tried and failed six times. Then he happened to notice a spider over his bed trying to fix its web on a beam in the ceiling. Six times the spider tried and failed. But the spider tried a seventh time and succeeded. Bruce decided that he too should try a seventh time. He went back to Scotland and led another army against the English. This time he was successful, and the English had to recognize Scottish independence.

Meanwhile Robin Hood met with Guy of Gisborne, who had boasted that he would capture Robin Hood sooner or later. After a fierce fight, Robin killed Guy. He put on Guy’s clothes, took his weapons and blew a blast on his horn, and then rode on until he came to the tree where Little John was bound. The sheriff mistook Robin for Guy, thinking he had killed Robin. As a reward, he gave him permission to kill Little John. But Robin released Little John, and gave him Guy’s bow. The sheriff and his men realized they had been fooled and took to their heels.

关于有趣的英语故事：一棵小苹果树A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew.
One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it.
The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit."
"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"
