Recommending Zhuge Liang on Horseback
Xu Shu was much valued by Liu Bei for his strategic talents. After several victories on the battleground against Cao Cao， Xu was made the chief military advisor. At the news， Cao Cao was begrudging. “If you want this person，” one of his advisors said， “you can bring his mother to Xuchang and send a forged letter in his mother's handwriting， asking Xu Shu to desert Liu Bei and come here. As Xu is well-known for a strong filial affection， surely he will come.” This plot worked， for Xu， on receiving the letter， cried tearfully， asking Liu Bei for an immediate departure. Feeling sad， though， Liu persisted in his stay for another night， during which the two aired their sad feelings.
the next day Liu laid a banquet outside the city for Xu. Holding the latter's hand， Liu said， “After we separate today， only heaven knows when and where we will meet again.” He wept bitter tears. After setting off on his way， Xu suddenly turned his horse and returned. “I almost forgot an important matter，” he said to Liu. “Ten kilometers from Xiangyang City， in a place called Long zhong， Do you want to meet him?” Liu expressed his willingness at once， but also aired doubt about whether Zhuge Liang was as talented as Xu. “He tells configurations of stars in the heavens，” Xu assured him， “and recognizes everything on earth. He knows a person's real nature at the first meeting-the number one talent under the heaven. If you have him as your military advisor， you'll have the country under your name.” Liu suggested a visit to Zhuge by Xu on his behalf， at this， the latter shook his head in disapproval. “You must go and offer your invitation personally， and his acceptance depends entirely on your sincerity.” With these words said， Xu turned his horse and left. Later， Liu paid three trips to Zhuge's straw house， another favorite story among Chinese people.

This is a story from Three Kingdoms. Guan Yu was hit by a poisonous arrow in the right arm while attacking Fancheng City. When his men took the arrowhead out， they found that the poison had already seeped into the bone， so they persuaded him to go to Jingzhou for treatment. Determined to take over Fancheng City， Guan refused to retreat. Seeing Guan's wound getting worse day by day， they sent out scouts to look for famous doctors. One day， a man named Hua Tuo came by boat to the camp especially to cure Guan Yu. Guan asked him about how he would heal the wound. Hua said： “I am afraid that you will be scared， so Isuggest that we set up a post with a loop to tie down your arm with rope. Then， when your eyes are covered， I will start the operation.” Guan laughingly said， “That's necessary.” Then he gave orders to hold a dinner for Hua Tuo. After drinking several glasses of wine， Guan started to play chess. At the same time， he reached out his right arm to Hua Tuo and said， “It is at your disposal. I have no fear.” Hua cut the skin and flesh open and scraped the bone with scalpel. Everyone present covered his eyes while Guan continued drinking and playing chess. In a moment， the blood filled a basin. When the poison was scraped off the bone， Guan stood up and smilingly said， “Now my arm can move freely just like before. Mr. Hua Tuo， you are a magic doctor!” Hua said， “Since I started medical practice， I have not seen anyone like you. You are a magic general.”

Liu Biao's wife Cai and her brother hadlong wished to Xiangyang to meet some officials. Cai and her brother decided it was an goodopportunity. They sent troops to guard every city gate except the western one， for outsidethat gate， the wide Tanxi River， with its rapid water， blocked the road. At the banquet forofficials， a man hinted to Liu Bei that Liu Biao planned to kill him. Liu Bei followed the man tothe back garden， where he whispered into his ear the details of plan Cai and her brother hadset. “Every gate but the western one is heavily guarded，” the man added. “The western gateis your only chance.” Alarmed， Liu Bei mounted the horse and fled. Outside the gate the riverblocked his way. Soldiers were fast approaching. Liu Bei whipped the horse like mad， theanimal moved forward， but after just a few steps into the river it stumbled. “Surely you harmyour master，” Liu Bei cried in despair. At this， oddly， the horse made a vigorous leap tothe other side of the river， leaving the soldiers behind.
