show up 出现

【讲解】

该习语本义为“突出，显眼”，在口语中引申为“在智力上表现超常”。例如：John had shown up all the other students.（约翰比其他的学生要聪明得多。）它在口语中的意思还可以是“到达，出席，露面”。

【对话】

A:We expected eighty people at the lecture, but twice that showed up.

A:我们预期有80个人来参加讲座，可是却到了两倍的人。

B:Fancy that.

B:真想不到。

A:It seems that many people are interested in this issue.

A:看来许多人都对这个论题感兴趣了。

B:The whole society should have given attention to this problem.
