去伦敦的访问使他能与律师决定事务。

[误] The visit to London afforded him to settle his business with the lawyers.

[正] The visit to London allowed him to settle his business with the lawyers.

注：虽然afford 与 chance 或opportunity 等连用时，含有“使......有机会做......”的意思，但afford 本身并不表
示“allow”（容许，许可）的意思，所以本句不能用afford，而要用allow。再者，afford 不能用于afford sb. to do sth.（如误句）的结构中，而allow sb. to do sth.则是常见的。
