A U.S. drone strike on Wednesday killed the deputy chief of the Pakistani Taliban, Pakistani officials said, in an attack that could hinder Islamabad's planned attempt to open peace talks with the militant group that is closely linked to al Qaeda.

The Central Intelligence Agency, which is authorized to carry out such attacks, declined to comment.

At the White House on Wednesday, spokesman Jay Carney said he was 'not in a position to confirm' Mr. Rehman's death. However, he said, if reports of Mr. Rehman's death prove true, it would take out the Pakistani Taliban's second in command and chief military strategist, adding that Mr. Rehman is connected to the bombing of a CIA base in Khost, Afghanistan, and 'participated in cross-border attacks in Afghanistan against U.S. and [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] personnel and horrific attacks against Pakistani civilians and soldiers.'

Once in office, Mr. Sharif will come under heavy pressure on the issue from a new political force, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, which has made opposition to American drones a central theme of its politics. Led by former cricket star Imran Khan, PTI was elected on May 11 to run the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan's only Pashtun-majority province, which is heavily infiltrated by the Taliban and adjacent to the tribal areas. PTI is also one of the two main opposition parties in the federal parliament.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which answers to the caretaker administration appointed to oversee the elections, also condemned the drone strike. It said the attack was 'counterproductive' and a violation of 'the principles of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.'
