China Examines Its Place in Obama's State of the Union

China was only mentioned twice, in passing, in Barack Obama's State of the Union address, but Chinese foreign policy minds are apparently carefully parsing the U.S. president's words.

Here's what the Obama said:

Next, we can put Americans to work today building the infrastructure of tomorrow. From the first railroads to the Interstate Highway System, our nation has always been built to compete. There's no reason Europe or China should have the fastest trains, or the new factories that manufacture clean energy products.

You see, Washington has been telling us to wait for decades, even as the problems have grown worse. Meanwhile, China is not waiting to revamp its economy. Germany is not waiting. India is not waiting. These nations-they're not standing still. These nations aren't playing for second place. They're putting more emphasis on math and science. They're rebuilding their infrastructure. They're making serious investments in clean energy because they want those jobs. Well, I do not accept second place for the United States of America.

A few hours after Obama's speech, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu responded to these references in carefully measured terms.

'We note China is mentioned in the State of the Union address. China would like to work extensively with the United States for mutual benefit,' he said at a regular press briefing in Beijing Thursday, according to Xinhua. 'I can hardly give an overall, comprehensive and accurate review of the address as we are still studying it.'

'As the United States is a country of great influence in the world, we hope its foreign policy will help boost world peace, stability and development,' Ma said. He also dismissed claims that China poses a threat to the U.S., Xinhua reported.

在美国总统奥巴马发表的国情咨文中，只有两次提到中国，而且还是一带而过。不过中国外交人士显然是在认真剖析奥巴马的一字一句。

以下是奥巴马讲话的内容：

下一步，我们可以让美国人现在就开始建造未来的基础设施。从最早的铁路系统到州际高速公路网，我们的国家一直致力于竞争。没道理让欧洲或中国拥有最快的火车，或是生产清洁能源产品的新工厂。
