A man wrote a letter and had it sent to a rich man to borrow an ox. The rich man was just receiving guests.

有个人写了一封信,派人去向一个富翁借头牛。富翁正在会客。

He was illiterate, but he resented very much being considered illiterate. Upon receiving the letter, he opened the envelope, and skimmed through the letter as if he could read.

富翁不识字,但是他却最忌讳人家说他不识字。他一接到信,就拆开信封,装出识字的样子,默默地看了一遍,

从前,有个宰相的孙子是有名的败家子。他把家产都败光了,连饭也吃不上,常常向别人家借米。

In the past, the grandson of a prime minister was a notorious squandered all the family property and couldn’t even afford his own meals, so he often borrowed rice from others.

有一次,他又借到了一袋米,背到半路上背不动了,只好在路旁歇脚。这时候,恰巧前面走来一个穷人,穿着破衣破裤。他就叫住穷人,讲好了工钱后,让穷人为他背米。

Once he borrowed another bag of carried it half- way and couldn’t go any further, so he rested by the this moment, a poor man in rags happened to pass by. He called this poor man, set the pay and let the poor man carry the rice for him.

不料,走了一段路程,穷人也气喘吁吁,走不动了。他就埋怨说: “我是宰相的孙子,手不能提,肩不能挑,那是常事。

Unexpectedly, after carrying the rice for some distance, the poor man also panted and couldn’t walk any grandson complained: “I am the grandson of a prime minister. It is natural that I can neither lift with my hands nor carry on my shoulder anything heavy.

你是穷人出身,为什么也这样不中用呢?” 那人不服气,翻翻白眼说: “你怎么能怪我,我并不是穷人出身,我也是宰相的孙子呢!”

  中英对照英语故事:自尊

从前,有一座寺庙,里面供奉着两座泥像,左边是道祖太上老君像,右边是佛祖释迎牟尼像。

In the past, there were two clay idols in a temple. On the left was the idol of Tai Shang Lao Jun,the founder of Taoism,and on the right the idol of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism.

一天,有个和尚看见庙中的这两座像,心里很不高兴,说: “我们佛法广大无边,怎么能让佛祖屈居在老君的右边呢?”

One day, a monk saw the two idols in the temple. He was displeased and said: “The power of Buddha is infinite. How can we condescend to allow the idol of Sakyamuni to be placed on the right of that of Tai Shang Lao Jun?”

于是,和尚动手把佛像搬到了老君像的左边。不久,来了个道士,看见这种情形很是气恼,说: “我们道教至高无上,怎么能让老君像屈居在佛像的右边呢?”

So the monk moved the Buddhist idol to the left of the Taoist ido1. Shortly afterwards, there came a Taoist priest. When he saw the situation, he felt offended and said: “Our Taoist doctrine is the highest and can we condescend to allow the Taoist idol to be placed on the right of the Buddhist idol?”

于是,道士立刻动手把老君像搬到了佛像的左边。就这样,和尚跟道士不停地搬来搬去,最后竟将这两座泥像都搬碎了。

So the Taoist priest moved the Taoist idol to the left of the Buddhist idol at , the monk and the Taoist priest kept on moving the two idols right and left until the idols were broken into pieces in the end.
