Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery after a brawl in Mykonos, Greece. The 27-year-old was detained alongside his brother Joe and a close friend on Saturday following a fight in a Mykonos bar.

The defender was charged with assault and violence against an officer, as well as several attempts of bribery. Maguire was not present in Syros today for the court case but he was found guilty on all charges and handed a 21 month and 10 days sentence. However, as this is Maguire’s first offence, the sentence was suspended.

The bribery charges carry a maximum sentence of up to three years in jail, as well as a hefty fine. It’s unclear as yet what verdict Joe Maguire and Chris Sharman, who both stood trial alongside Maguire, have received. It comes after an explosive morning in court where Maguire’s defence lawyers claimed his sister, Daisy, was injected with a ‘rape drug’. Daisy is said to have been approached by two Albanian men in the bar while Maguire and others were outside the property.

Fern Hawkins, Maguire’s fiancee, is said to have noticed that Daisy was suddenly feeling unwell and a group of male friends – including Maguire – ran back into the bar to her aid. The group called for a taxi to take Daisy to hospital but Ashden Morley, a close friend of the Maguire’s, says panic soon set in when a vehicle behind their car pulled their minibus over and ‘physical pulled’ the group out of the car. ‘Our bus door opened and five or six males tried to force us off the bus by physically pulling us,’ said Mr Morley.

The 28-year-old claims the group were then beaten by batons by the undercover officers and repeatedly stamped on. Morley says the group feared they were being kidnapped, given that the officers were undercover and had not clearly articulated that they were Greek police.
