国家卫健委新闻发言人米锋在4月17日召开的新闻发布会上表示，根据武汉市的订正（revision）结果：截至4月16日24时，各省（区、市）和新疆生产建设兵团累计死亡病例（the total number of deaths from COVID-19）4632例，累计报告确诊病例82692例。
武汉市新冠肺炎疫情防控指挥部发布的通报指出，2020年3月下旬，专门成立涉疫大数据与流行病学调查组，进行数据核实（data verification）和流行病学调查（epidemiological surveys），全面核查（comprehensive examination and verification）全武汉市殡仪馆（funeral parlors）、医疗机构（medical institutions）、公安机关（public security authorities）以及社区等多个部门的数据，对新冠肺炎确诊病例、死亡病例进行线上比对、去重、补全。线下对所有涉疫地点数据进行全采集，包括发热门诊（fever clinics）、医院、方舱、隔离点（quarantine locations）、涉疫社区，以及公安、司法、民政等部门管辖的监所、养老机构（elder care homes）等特殊场所，对所有病例个人信息全采集，通过医疗机构、街道社区、基层派出所（police stations）、患者所在单位及家属（family members），逐人排查核对（every case was checked and reviewed），确保每一个病例准确无误，每一个数据客观真实。
通报指出，出现数据差异是由于疫情早期患者数量持续增加（rapid rise in patient numbers），医护人员力量不足且救治压力巨大，客观上存在迟报（delayed reporting）、漏报和误报现象。数据差异原因还包括疫情早期核酸检测（nucleic acid testing）和收治能力严重不足。2月20日以前，由于医院床位不够，有些确诊病人未能及时到医院治疗死亡（some patients died at home without being treated）未上报；疫情早期少数医疗机构未能与疾病预防控制信息系统对接（not linked with the online direct reporting system），疫情信息报送工作未同步跟上医疗机构扩容收治的进度。
通报称，根据相关中国法律法规（relevant Chinese laws and regulations），本着对历史负责、对人民负责、对逝者负责的原则（under the principle of "being responsible to history, the people and the deceased"），武汉市进行了数据订正。
