Donald Trump escalated the email hacking controversy in the US election yesterday when he urged Russia to track down and hand over tens of thousands of emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server which have yet to be released.
唐纳德•特朗普(Donald Trump)昨日呼吁俄罗斯追踪并移交从希拉里•克林顿(Hillary Clinton)私人服务器发出、迄今未公开的数万份电子邮件，这使得美国选举中围绕电邮窃取门的争论进一步升级。
The Clinton campaign immediately accused Mr Trump of endangering national security and his comments were also criticised by Republicans.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr Trump said at a press conference yesterday. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

The Republican candidate was referring to the emails from Mrs Clinton’s private email server that were not handed over to the authorities when its existence was revealed. He was talking days after the leak of emails from the Democratic National Committee, which researchers have said were hacked by groups in Russia with links to the state.

Robby Mook, the Clinton campaign manager, also criticised Mr Trump. Speaking at a Wall Street Journal event, Mr Mook said it was troubling that Russia had hacked the Democratic party email server, but added that what Mr Trump was proposing was “even more troubling”. “This is now a national security question,” said Mr Mook.

Mike Pence, the Indiana governor and Mr Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, criticised the Clinton campaign over the claims about Russian hacking.

“The FBI will get to the bottom of who is behind the hacking. If it is Russia and they are interfering in our elections, I can assure you both parties and the United States government will ensure there are serious consequences,” said Mr Pence. “That said, the Democrats are singularly focusing on who might be behind it and not addressing the basic fact they’ve been exposed as a party who not only rigs the government, but rigs elections while literally accepting cash for federal appointments is outrageous.”

Jake Sullivan, the top Clinton campaign policy adviser, slammed Mr Trump over his remarks. “This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent. That’s not hyperbole, those are just the facts,” said Mr Sullivan. “This has gone from being a matter of curiosity, and a matter of politics, to being a national security issue.”

Paul Ryan, House Speaker, said: “Russia is a global menace led by a devious thug. Putin should stay out of this election.” At his Miami news conference, Mr Trump said he did not do business with Russia or with leader Vladimir Putin, despite the latter’s praise for the Republican candidate. He again refused to release his tax returns until after a federal audit of them is complete.

“I have nothing to do with Russia,” Mr Trump said repeatedly.
