David Cameron, UK prime minister, is heading back to Downing Street after a dramatic election victory, with results pointing to an outright majority for his centre-right Conservative Party in parliament.

But the country he leads faces unprecedented strain after a night of triumph for leftwing Scottish nationalists who won all but a handful of Scotland’s seats, becoming the third largest party in Westminster just eight months after losing an independence referendum.

The election result also sets the stage for a bruising fight over Britain’s membership of the 28-member European Union. Mr Cameron has promised to hold a referendum on continued EU membership and wants to win back more control over some issues from Brussels.

With most results in, the Conservatives are projected to just exceed the 323 seats Mr Cameron needs for an effective majority – a far better result than senior party strategists had imagined possible.

The centre-left Labour opposition party is predicted to win just 239 seats, suggesting the party is heading for its worst election result since 1987 — a crushing disappointment for its leader Ed Miliband, whose campaign to make Britain more equal failed to capture the nation’s imagination.

The pound surged as markets responded to the results suggesting Mr Cameron could emerge as leader of a relatively stable Conservative government.

The Prime Minister offered a conciliatory message to Scottish voters as the election results came in. “We must reclaim the mantle we should never have lost: the mandate of one nation, one United Kingdom,” he said.

The Scottish National party won 56 of Scotland’s 59 seats, up from six in the last election in 2010, sweeping senior Labour figures from office in the party’s traditional heartland and setting the stage for a deeply divided parliament.

“The Scottish lion has roared this morning across the country,” said Alex Salmond, the party’s former leader, who won his own seat and said it was “inconceivable” for any Westminster government to ignore the united voice of Scotland.

The Conservatives’ junior coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, suffered a stunning collapse in support and are projected to lose 46 out of their 56 seats.

The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, sparked speculation over his own future as leader after what he called “a cruel and punishing night” for his party.

Mr Clegg, deputy prime minister in the coalition government of the last five years, managed to hang on to his own seat. But he accepted the results had “profound implications for the country” and “obviously” for his party, adding that he would address party colleagues about his future later on Friday morning.

The anti-EU UK Independence party was on course to become the third biggest party in terms of national support, but was expected to win just two seats at most under Britain’s first-past-the-post voting system.
