Turkey said it found the bodies of two pilots shot downby Syria during a contested flight, an announcement that is likely to lead to renewed finger-pointing over an event that has pushed the neighbors' relations to a new low.

The finding is likely to renew attention on where and how the Turkish RF4 surveillance jet was downed on June 22, an event that raised tensions along Turkey's 565-mile border with Syria.

Turkey, by contrast, has said the plane was hit 13 miles off the Syrian coast, about a mile beyond the country's 12-mile boundary, before crashing 8.5 miles off Syria. In accordance with its belief about where the jet went down, Turkey has been searching for wreckage at depths of more than 1,200 meters, according to a statement by Turkey's armed forces.

Pentagon officials said they hadn't yet seen details of where the bodies were recovered. One senior U.S. official said the U.S. couldn't yet say "one way or the other" if the information bolstered Turkey's account. "I have not seen any indication we can validate their claim," the U.S. official said.
