Once there lived a rich man who was justly proud ofhis cellar and the wine therein. And there was onejug of ancient vintage kept for some occasion knownonly to himself.

从前，有个富翁，不无理由地以他的酒窖和窖藏美酒自豪。其中有一瓶远年陈葡萄酒，是他珍藏着留作盛会用的，究竟是什么盛会，可只有他自己知道。

The governor of the state visited him, and he bethought him and said, "That jug shall not beopened for a mere governor."

地方官来拜访他，他心中寻思道："不过是地方官罢了，不必为他开这瓶酒。"

And a bishop of the diocese visited him, but he said to himself, "Nay, I will not open that would not know its value, nor would its aroma reach his nostrils."

教区的主教来拜访他，可他跟自己说道："不，我不愿为他开这瓶酒。他不会懂得这酒的价值，这酒的香味地也闻不出来。"

The prince of the realm came and supped with him. But he thought, "It is too royal a wine for amere princeling."

王国的王子来临，和他一同进餐。但是他想："他不过是个小小的王子，不配喝那么高贵的美酒。"

And even on the day when his own nephew was married, he said to himself, "No, not to theseguests shall that jug be brought forth."

甚至在他自己的侄儿结婚的时候，他也对自己说道："不，那瓶酒可不拿出来给那些客人们喝。"

And the years passed by, and he died, an old man, and he was buried like unto every seed andacorn.

And upon the day that he was buried the ancient jug was brought out together with other jugsof wine, and it was shared by the peasants of the neighbourhood. And none knew its great age.

他下葬的那天，那瓶远年陈葡萄酒和其它的酒都拿出来了，被农民和邻居们分着喝掉了。没有一个人辨别出这瓶酒是远年陈酒。

A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for thewonderful apple he grew.

一个穷困的农夫有一个朋友，这个朋友因为种了神奇的苹果树而远近闻名。

One day, his friend gave the farmer a young appletree and told him to take it home and plant it.

有一天，农夫的这个朋友送给他一棵小苹果树。

The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it.

农夫对这个礼物非常高兴。但当他回到家时，却不知道将它栽在什么地方。

He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If heplanted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of theapples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.

他担心他把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人会偷树上的苹果，他把树种在自己的一块地里，邻居们夜里就会过来偷苹果。他把树栽在自己的房子边，他的孩子们就会摘苹果。

Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and goodsoil, the tree soon died.

最后，他把那棵树栽在了林子里，那里没人能看见。但没有阳光和泥土，树不久就死了。

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's thedifference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers wouldhave stolen the fruit.

后来，朋友问农夫他为什么把树栽在那样贫瘠的地方。“那有什么不一样?”农夫生气地说， “我把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人就会偷树上的苹果。

If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have come at night and stolensome of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken thefruit."

我把树栽在自己的一块地里，邻居们夜里就会来偷苹果。我把树栽在自己的房边，我自己的孩子们就会摘苹果。”

"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not onlyhave robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"

“是的，”他的朋友说. “但至少可能有人来分享这些果实。现在你不仅剥夺了每个人的果实，也毁了一棵好苹果树!”
