In a college gymnasium this month in Newark, New Jersey, Sen. Cory A. Booker introduced Hillary Clinton to the crowd.

Although she is at ease with younger hopefuls like Castro, Clinton has also relished policy conversations with Perez, a favorite of labor unions, her advisers said. (Sen.
