outrun就是run away from的意思，表示逃脱。它是一个及物动词，后面直接跟需要逃离的事物或者人。
这个词还能表示“超出”，比方入不敷出，就能说His expenditure outran his income.

【52】词组讲解：fight off
fight off表示击退、驱赶，具体的和抽象的都能用这个词组。
这边就是一个抽象的用法，并不是真正驱赶走爱德华，而是指贝拉难以抗拒他的美丽，fight off在这里作为“抗拒、克服”的解释。
