Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will meet next week as part of a summit in Minsk between the Eurasian Customs Union, the EU and Ukraine, writes Kathrin Hille in Moscow . It will be the two leaders’ first encounter since brief talks during the D-Day anniversary in Normandy in early June.

Both Kiev and Moscow confirmed their presidents’ attendance at the meeting on August 26, plans for which had first been announced by Kazakhstan last week. “A number of bilateral meetings will be taking place,” the Kremlin said.

The conference marks the latest attempt to reach a diplomatic solution to the escalating Ukraine crisis. A meeting between the chiefs of staff of Mr Putin and Mr Poroshenko last Friday indicated that such efforts were under way.

However, the foreign ministers of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France failed to make progress towards a political solution at talks in Berlin on Sunday.

The Kremlin did not confirm whether Mr Putin would hold one-on-one talks with Mr Poroshenko in Minsk, but a senior Russian government official said top-level dialogue was necessary given the continuing humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine.

Tension spiked last Friday following Russia’s move to send a convoy of more than 270 lorries with humanitarian aid intended for residents of eastern Ukraine. Moscow’s decision triggeRed suspicion in Kiev and among western governments that Russia was preparing for an invasion.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has since confirmed that the convoy contains only humanitarian goods. However, the lorries have remained stuck at the border, as the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatist rebels have yet to give guarantees for their safe passage.
