基本概况Hunan University，situated at the foot of the picturesque Yuelu Mountain in Changsha，Hunan Province，is one of the key universities affiliated with the Ministry of Education. It is a time-honored key university in China，originating from Yuelu Academy and is now included in China's“Project 211”and“Project 985”for priority investment and construction.
湖南大学坐落在湖南省长沙市风景秀丽的岳麓山下，是由岳麓书院衍续至今、办学历史悠久的全国重点大学，是直属国家教育部、列入国家"211工程”、"985工程”重点投资和建设的高等学府。
Hunan University is now a comprehensive and well-coordinated university fea- turfing studies in engineering，with a strong foundation in science，a unique cultural background in liberal arts and its own characteristics in economics. It has now 29 colleges and departments and a graduate school，offering 57 undergraduate programs，171 master programs，12 first-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D degrees，69 second-order disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees and 12 post-doctoral research centers. It has 6 academic degree authorizations，1 national research center for engineering technology，1 state key laboratory，2 key laboratoties of the Ministry of Education and 1 center for environmental technology funded through international cooperation.
湖南大学是一所理科基础坚实、工科实力雄厚、文科独具浓厚的文化背景、经济学科富有特色、多学科协调发展的综合性大学。学校设有29个院系和研究生院，拥有57个本科专业，171个硕士学位学科授权点，12个博士学位授权一级科，69个博士学位授权二级学科，12个博士后科研流动站。拥有6个专业学位授权，一个国家工程技术研究中心，一个国家重点实验室，2个教育部重点实验室和一个国际合作基金设立的环境技术中心。It has a staff of over 4 700，of which are more than 1 200 full and associate professors，4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences，7 academicians of Chinese Academy of the Engineering，8 members of the state“millon talents program"，5 national-level members of the state "Talent Project for the New Century" and 6 professors invited on“Cheungkong Scholars Program" and 5 lecture professors.
现有教职工4 700多人，其中教授、副教授1 200余人，中科院院士4名，工程院院士7名，国家“百千万人才工程”第一、二层次人选8人，国家“跨世纪优秀人才支持计一划”5人，“长江学者”特聘教授6人，讲座教授5人。
The student body totals nearly 30 000，including 21 690 undergraduates and 8 400 postgraduates.
现有全日制在校学生3万余人，其中本科生21 69余人、研究生8 400余人It covers a total area of 1 600 000 square meters with a construction area of over 1 030 000 square meters. The university library has a collection of 3 600 000 volumes and has realized automatic management with on-line information retrieval and literature transmission services. It has also built the trunk network of its Campus Computer Networks and has set up interactive network teaching platforms centered on multi-media coursewares.

厉史变迁976 Hunan University's predecessor-Yuelu Academy-was founded.
976年湖南大学的前身岳麓朽院创立1903 Yuelu Academy and Hunan Capital Grand School were merged to form Hunan Institute of Higher Learning.
1903年岳麓卜院与湖南省城人学堂合并成立湖南高等学堂1926 It was officially named Provincial Hunan University.
1926年湖南高等学堂更名为省立湖南大学1937 It was upgraded to National Hunan University.
1937年更名为国立湖南大学1949 It was renamed Hunan University.
1949年更名为湖南大学。2000 Hunan University and Hunan College of Finance and Economics were merged to form a new Hunan University.
2000年原湖南大学、湖南财经学院合并成立新的湖南大学2002 Hunan Computer College was merged into the university.
2002年湖南计算机高等专科学校并人湖南大学。
