Dreams of finding lost treasure almost came true recently. A new machine called‘The Revealer'has been invented and it has been used to detect gold which has been buried in the ground. The machine was used in a cave near the seashore where-it is said-pirates used to hide gold. The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it. Armed with the new machine, a search party went into the cave hoping to find buried treasure. The leader of the party was examining the soil near the entrance to the cave when the machine showed that there was gold under the ground. Very excited, the party dug a hole two feet deep. They finally found a small gold coin which was almost worthless. The party then searched the whole cave thoroughly but did not find anything except an empty tin trunk. In spite of this, many people are confident that‘The Revealer'may reveal something of value fairly soon.

come true:(梦想)成真，come作连系动词

2、The machine was used in a cave near the seashore where-it is said-pirates used to hide gold.
it is said:据说，插入语作补充说明，可去掉
where pirates used to hide gold：定语从句修饰cave
used to：过去常常做...

3、The pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it.
would do sth.:过去的习惯性动作，"总是..."的意思
bury和fail都是跟在助动词would后的谓语动词
fail to do sth.:没能做某事
collect:取走

4、Armed with the new machine, a search party went into the cave hoping to find buried treasure.
be armed with:用...武装起来, 装备有...的
Armed with the new machine：分词短语做状语，表伴随状况
=>Tired of sleeping on the floor, a young man in Teheran saved up for years to buy a real bed.
=>Very excited, the party dug a hole two feet deep.

hoping to find buried treasure:现在分词短语作状语，表示目的。

5、The leader of the party was examining the soil near the entrance to the cave when the machine showed that there was  gold under the ground.
the entrance to：.....的入口;注意介词to的用法
when:在这个时候

6、In spite of this, many people are confident that‘The Revealer'may reveal something of value fairly soon.
may:可能
fairly：相当，颇  程度副词
fairly

would do sth.

would一般表示从过去看将来, 但此处表示 "used to" 过去常做

=>he pirates would often bury gold in the cave and then fail to collect it.
=>He would sit for hours doing nothing.

比较一下下面段落中would和used to用法上的区别

When I was young I used to have a lot more free time than I do now. I used to live near my work and would always get home early. Sometimes I would do a bit of gardening or go for a long walk.

当我们提到过去某一特定时间时, 我们有时可用would来代替used to. 但是, 我们不能在下面这个句子中使用would:

=>This sort of novel used to be very popular.这种小说过去很流行.

分词短语

=>A new machine called‘The Revealer' has been invented.
