The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'. Because the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased. The tree was planted near the church fifty years ago, but it is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation. It is said that if anyone touches the tree, he will have bad luck; if he picks a leaf, he will die. Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims. The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused. He has pointed out that the tree is a useful source of income, as tourists have been coming from all parts of the country to see it. In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk. So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death !

1、The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.
of:介词，表示同位语关系
Ex:
纽约市          the city of New York
詹姆士这个名字  the name of James
is said:据说（被动语态）

2、Because the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased.
the number:主语，所以谓语动词用单数形式has increased
to:到...地方

3、Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims.
claim:cause the loss or death of sb.

4、The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down
have sth. done:叫别人做某事
to have the tree cut down,把这棵树砍掉
在这个短语中 cut down是动词 have的宾语 the tree的补足语，常用来表示叫别人完成的动作

5、In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk.
in spite of:不管，后面只能跟名词/名词性从句（句中跟了代词all，后面为that引导的定语从句，that从句中作主语则不省略）
in spite of all that...= in spite of what
all后面跟定语从句时，关系代词只能用that

6、So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death !
so far:到目前为止，一般和现在完成时连用
not one of = none of ≠ no one of  (no one 不能加 of)
strike down:击倒，使死去

第四部分 KEY STRUCTURES AND USAGE

被动语态

注意动词ask，help，remind的被动语态+不定式的结构

1)The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.
=It is said that the tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree'.

2)The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused.

3)The boy was told to be quiet.

4)She was reminded not to leave valuable things in the room.

强调句(it is/was+被强调的部分+that/who从句)

1)It is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation.(强调时间状语)

2)It was in England that we first met.（强调地点状语）

3)It's he who has solved the problem for year.（强调主语）

4)It was because of him that we succeeded.（强调原因状语）
