Firemen had been fighting the forest fire for nearly three weeks before they could get it under control. A short time before, great trees had covered the countryside for miles around. Now, smoke still rose up from the warm ground over the desolate hills. Winter was coming on and the hills threatened the surrounding villages with destruction, for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would cause serious floods as well. When the fire had at last been put out, the forest authorities ordered several tons of a special type of grassseed which would grow quickly. The seed was sprayed over the ground in huge quantities by aeroplanes. The planes had been planting seed for nearly a month when it began to rain. By then, however,in many places the grass had already taken root. In place of the great trees which had been growing there for centuries, patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil

had been fighting the forest fire:过去完成进行时
此处fight为vt.，意思为"和...做斗争"
get sth. under control:把...控制住
Ex:
in control : 在控制之内
under control : 在控制之下,被控制
out of control : 失控
注意连词before的用法，表示"才..."

er was coming on and the hills threatened the surrounding villages with destruction, for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would cause serious floods as well.
come on:表示季节的降临
for:连词for引导第3个分句，用于解释前面句子的意思
not as well：不仅...而且
wash away:冲走，冲掉

authorities: pl.当局，官方
Ex:
the local authorities：地方当局
the military authorities：军事当局

4. The seed was sprayed over the ground in huge quantities by aeroplanes.
seed:不可数名词
in huge quantities:大量的
spray over:把...撒在...上面

planes had been planting seed for nearly a month when it began to rain. By then, however,in many places the grass had already taken root.
when:连词，表示"在这个时候"
by then:常和完成时态连用
had already taken root：过去完成时（take root生根）

place of the great trees which had been growing there for centuries, patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil.
in place of: instead of
which had been growing there for centuries:定语从句修饰the great trees.
green: n. 草地

过去完成进行时态，常和"一段时间"连用

=>Winter was coming on (过去进行时，表示过去将来的概念) and the hills threatened （一般过去时）the surrounding villages with destruction, for heavy rain would not only wash away（过去将来时）the soil but would cause （过去将来时）serious floods as well.

过去完成时举例（注意句中时间状语）
=>A short time before, great trees had covered the countryside for miles around.
=>By then, however,in many places the grass had already taken root.

比较以下几个时间状语

a short time before--从过去某一点时间算起, 一段时间以前
a short time ago--从现在算起, 一段时间以前
a short time before和a short time ago都可以放在段时间之后
